There’s a certain kind of silence you only find high in the Himalayas. In Spiti Valley, it comes with snow on the ridges, smoke rising from village homes and monasteries that have stood for centuries. At about 12,500 feet, this cold desert is made for travellers who want solitude and big landscapes. Deyor’s Frozen Spiti Valley 6N/7D trip is a guided winter group journey from Delhi, so you don’t have to plan transport or stays.
The route. You board an overnight Volvo from Delhi to Shimla and then drive to Sarahan, where you visit the 800-year-old Bhimakali Temple and enjoy a bonfire. Next you travel through Kinnaur to Chitkul, the last village near the China border, and spend the night at a homestay in Sangla. Then you cross the Khab bridge, where the Spiti and Sutlej rivers meet, and enter Spiti, stopping at Gue Monastery to see its famous mummy, said to be about 500 years old. You continue to Tabo and Dhankar Monastery, perched on rocky spurs, before reaching Kaza. The big sightseeing day covers Komic, one of the highest motorable villages in the world, Hikkim’s high-altitude post office, Key Monastery, Langza, Kibber and the Chicham Bridge. The return takes you via Kalpa, with views of the Kinnaur Kailash range, and Shimla, where you board the overnight Volvo back to Delhi.

What’s included. The Volvo from Delhi to Shimla and back, tempo traveller or SUV travel for the rest of the journey, stays in camps, hotels or homestays, 12 meals, an experienced trip leader, local drivers, 24x7 onboard assistance, an oxygen cylinder and medical kit, and driver allowances, tolls and parking. Alcohol, personal expenses and extra costs caused by landslides or roadblocks are not included.

You should be comfortable with cold weather and high altitude, and it helps to carry warm layers, a rucksack instead of a trolley bag, and a postpaid SIM, since only postpaid connections work reliably in the region.
